The war in Ukraine is already medieval in its brutish cruelty and singular provenance. Vladimir Putin’s villainy could almost be Shakespearean, were his motivations more complex and his character even a little tortured, but his motives are remarkably simple and those tortures which animate both character and deed are all externalised. He is less Richard III than first draft Bond villain.
I'm happy with the thinky Putin insights rather than the ScoMo jokes. The recent performance of our Butterball Brained PM has been hilarious enough. The latest photo ops are surely some form of self parody, he couldn't think anyone is taking him seriously anymore. In a few months time he'll go join the Onion Muncher and we can debate which of them was the worst PM ever.

I'm picking a chemical attack or battlefield nuke he blames on Ukraine. Suggested response is a truck nuke near the Kremlin blows away Putin and, sadly, a few hundred thousand semi-innocent Muskovites. I'm also wondering if Ukraine can raise a sort of Vlasov Army, actively seek defectors, maybe officers who will turn entire units over, perhaps Byelorussian... drive said column into Russia...
I find it very hard to believe the Russian army incompetence theory. I think that they could throw enough conventional hardware at Ukraine to subjugate it if that's what they wanted. I think that their approach is to terrorise the Ukrainians for a while, consolidate what they've gained and keep the rest of the world guessing. Surely the Russians know better than anyone that occupation is hard, expensive, dirty work. I've been amazed how people seem to have instagrammed this into a meme fest. Truth being the first casualty of war seems to have been weaponised in the social media age. Putin is a rotten bastard in a world full of rotten bastards of which we have our own splendid examples.
