You hit the nail on the head with ‘kind’ online, JB. There is such an erosion of safe spaces it seems… but then gems like this one! Was saying to my girlfriend just this morning how I’m looking forward to what you’ll be sending out today. I was so sure it would be a DeSantis rant… fk knows why I was so sure 🥸

This was even better :)

I love burger. I loved old Brissie except the cops were more brutal than the NT cops and that's saying something! My questions about twitter about which I know very little are these. Isn't it a potent force of misinformation and fake news ? And isn't Musk going to go broke if he can't save it? Musk isn't going broke anytime soon in my opinion so maybe this sewer that people seem to love splashing around in, and that you've almost eulogised, isn't on the block just yet? I love Ms Hardy with a passion. Next time that you're on twitter tell her there's an old, bashed up bushie who remembers Frank at Wave Hill who thinks her whole family has been instrumental in shaping this country.

Ah, the Journalspace days. They were good. Some fun drunky and nosh times with fine folk.

Weaned myself off Twitter around Trump time. Still occasionally have a gander. Dunno what craziness Musk has in mind but he can take a flying fuck at a rolling donut. Such Masters Of The Universe are annoying.

I really liked MySpace. And I don't really understand why things made of electrons and pixels have to go, and we can't just all head back there.

So good John. From the ephemeral friendships of kid's swimming lessons, schools and junior sport, to fear of old Twitter not being there one morning, to growing up in Brisbane and not letting guys like you into places I worked; hit after hit. One of your best (two maybe).

Oh dear. As that loud band said- it's sad but true. Marieke is so lovely; know that 100%. Likely will never meet her, or even chat. Great piece JB. Love tweeting shit out to people I don't know about stuff that may not matter. Now you have me thinking it does. Chuck D followed me the other day. I have very few followers. Maybe his cat had the mouse. Dunno. Think that's going out on a high.

It really is hard to imagine Twitter surviving in anything like its previous social media force with Elon Musk in charge. Are the Australian sports betting folk giving odds? Whilst I have heard in the past they offer odds on anything I have no idea how betting works.

Elon's imminent destruction of Twirtle will be the most rapid business failure in history, and also the greatest example of uber-rich echochamber thinking we've yet witnessed. How anyone could think removing actual verification from the verification system, and firing 75% of the engineers running the platform, would improve the business is beyond me. Those are the actions of a madman and/or a moron.

As for the social aspect, I left the platform about 5 years ago with 32k tweets under my belt, upset that all those words about global sustainability should actually have been in a novel. Not really though. The real reason I left Twitter was mental health - sustainability was and probably still is a mercilessly trolled subject that I am very serious about - and tbh I never looked back so powerful was the improvement once I cut and ran.

I love this piece JB.

And next I'm going over to Cheeseburger to read and reminisce about the atmosphere of clubs full of boaty shoes.

I didn’t even know you were still maintaining Burger as it doesn’t show up in my Feed. Looks like I’ve some catching up to do

I let it lie fallow for a while but it’s back.

love this!

as someone who has formed lasting bonds over the love of a good pun, I completely agree that true friendship can form in unexpected places...I look forward to reading the Burger (how did I not know of its existence before?).

PS I too remember not being allowed into an establishment (something truly horrible, on Mary St if I recall) in 80s Brisbane because my boyfriend had pointy boots! very un-'boaty', hoh!
