This reminds me of the time the ABC Darwin Radio show, Tales from the Tinny, told their listeners to vote for the imaginary Tales from the Tinny fishing party. I was scrutineering the count at one on the polling booths and heaps of informal votes for TFTTFP kept coming through. It was freaking hilarious. They beat the One Nation candidate hands down ! TFTT is no more but podcasts should still be on the website. If you want a good laugh, have a listen. Get a mullet up ya was their slogan.
so could this be read as an endorsement to vote for Trump, or Biden or biting satire of the whole 'democratic franchise thing'? I'm I am not the first to say it but the USA is giving off a 'last season vibe' with the writers throwing everything in the script because they know its not going to be renewed.
The words of H. L. Mencken seem apt as ever: "there is always a well-known solution to every human problem—neat, plausible, and wrong". The authoritarian demagogues (or demigods as the case may be) always trot them out, and always make things (much) worse when they get the chance. Reality is hard and solutions require compromise. And where's HellBoy when you need him?
H.L. Mencken turned a few phrases I find apt, one of my favourites of his "Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats."
Nice one Andrew. This one from Mencken was particularly prescient:
"On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."
I’m still concerned about the sensitive documents he left lying around in his house at R’Lyeh. He claims he wasn’t aware of them, he was just waiting there dead and dreaming, but, well, I’m not sure that that *is* dead which can eternal lie, and he’s clearly lying. Couldn’t lie straight in bed, as my uncle used to say, and that’s literal in this case on account of the non-Euclidean mattress design. I mean, who the ftaghn does he think he is? Iä!
Every time I find myself wondering "How could Americans..." I remember Dutton here as the alternate reality. Going to hell in Cthulhu's hand basket seems to be the only option available. I'm not calling it a choice. I don't think it matters being there. The "creeping terror and the crawling void" is not what I choose for anyone's offspring and grand-offspring.
And so I occasionally find myself muttering Keats:
"Now more than ever seems it rich to die,
To cease upon the midnight with no pain."
But then, there it is - that little light of hope...
A perfect dissection of what Americans have done to democracy.
I made the mistake of watching some of the RNC this week too. It struck me as a cross between a WWE Summer Slam and the latest offering from Jimmy Swaggart's Mega-Church. About 5 minutes in I threw up violently - no doubt a personal message from Cthulhu - and decided to mind my own business instead... at least until I'm cast into the Pit with everyone else.
Just finished bingeing season 4 of the Boys. It too followed the US election track dementia and if it wasn't for the Supes beating people bloody I would have been hard pressed to distinguish it from reality.
